How long is jane eyre movie 2011
Scott edition on a special pedestal, but this new atmospheric adaptation proves to be worthwhile. It should introduce a new audience to the classic tale. John, played by Mr. Her "tale of woe", as Rochester mockingly describes it before even hearing a word, is the familiar Charlotte Bronte yarn -suffering a scary childhood at the hands of such ogres as Mrs.
Reed Sally Hawkins, in her least giggly role to date -very effective. Years at a school for castoff girls, where corporal punishment is de rigeur, merely season Jane for life's hard knocks.
The romantic sweep of her dealings with Rochester are well portrayed, and director Cary Joji Fukunaga makes terrific use of the stark locations, shot in painterly fashion. The visuals alone make this remake worthwhile, backed by the BBC but definitely not a "Masterpiece Theatre" small-screen effort like the recent re-dos of all of Jane Austen. I guess screenwriter Moira Buffini adhered to a more purist approach. After all, Jane is going to fall for him eventually.
I still prefer Scott or Orson Welles in the role -tough competition indeed. Besides the principals, Dame Judi Dench is solid as a rock as Rochester's housekeeper, giving it her always-A-game approach and adding nuance to what could be merely a stock role. FAQ 1. Jane is out walking in the woods; a mysterious man on horseback falls when his mount shies at the sight of her, a mishap that necessitates some physical proximity: she must put her arms around him and help him back to the horse.
Later, in the house Rochester reveals himself to her and capriciously blames Jane for his injury. Fassbender and Wasikowska make this moment not a meet-cute, but a meet-fateful, a meet-important, and indeed a meet-erotic. This meeting is paced exactly right, it seems to me. But I found the handling of two other famously dramatic episodes — the wedding scene and the Bertha Mason outcome — rather brisk, especially compared with the unhurried way the rest of the film dwells on the countryside, and Jane's extremely lonely and frustrated place in it.
There are some wonderful images. Often, Jane's yearning and passion is dramatically displaced into the keening of a single violin in Dario Marianelli's orchestral score. But, to my eye, the wedding and the Bertha sequence, are taken at a jog, especially compared to the melodramatic emphasis that adaptations traditionally give to these moments. Fukunaga and screenwriter Moira Buffini have undoubtedly done a really classy job with this Jane Eyre; I can't fault it, and yet I can't quite get excited about it either.

View All Critic Reviews Jul 27, Having not actually read the source material or seen the countless other adaptation of Jane Eyre, one can only judge it based on what it accomplished, and against the genre that it's a part of.
As a 19th Century period piece, Jane Eyre is a successful film. It's very well executed at most every level, with excellent production values, world building, compelling performances, and a mostly engaging narrative. I say mostly engaging, as the film does get a bit dull towards the end, with a notable descent in to melancholy. In additoin, there are parts of the film that feel too compact, as is the pitfalls of many films from novels. Yet the heart of the story is a fascinating one, with the film remaining anchored with the character of Jane Eyre, played rather brilliantly by Mia Wasikowska.
Her Jane Eyre is one brimming with emotion, complexity, and drive, yet one ever so elegantly restrained with a sort of melancholy venire. Wasikowska conveys this to an amazingly raw extent, giving the film most of its narrative power. Fassbender's Rochester is also a fascinating character, though one could have wanted more from his characterization his back-story was very unclear.
Still, his chemistry with Mia is palpable. The direction is mostly strong, having a solid pace up until the end, when the film seems to slow and meander a bit. We get a sense that with all of the characters on screen, there is a lot to be had, yet the constraints of the medium mean that only certain storylines could be fleshed out.
Eyre's later inheritance and uncle is one plot line that was frustratingly glossed over, which is disappointing considering the interesting direction Eyre's character development was taking. Still, with what the film chooses to focus on, it does well. An overall effective piece. Jeffrey M Super Reviewer. Mar 29, This movie is why I fell in love with Michael Fassbender. Ask me to marry you, Michael.
I'd say, "yes"! Christian C Super Reviewer. Jan 28, Despite some fantastic cinematography and great performances from the two leads, Jane Eyre still wasn't all that interesting to me. However, my problem with it relates to the story, which is in no way the fault of talented director Cary Fukunaga, who creates a gorgeously-rendered adaptation of the book of the same name.
Despite my gripes with the story being told, the film rarely if ever devolves into mindless melodrama and will surely satisfy those who enjoyed the book, as this is definitely well-made. Be forewarned though, if you aren't a fan of this sort of 19th century romance story, this adaptation of Jane Eyre isn't likely to change your mind. Joey S Super Reviewer.
