It all began with the price of bread—and dozens of other social, political and economic factors. Out of the revolution was born the First Republic, organized in with a National Convention made up of several political parties, including the Montagnards, who drew support from the bourgeoisie in Paris, and the Girondins, who wanted a national government chosen by all French citizens, not just those in Paris.

But the First Republic was plagued by violence and upheaval. The bloody period came to be known as the Reign of Terror. Amidst the chaos of organizing and ruling the fledgling republic, a military officer named Napoleon Bonaparte rose through the ranks.

After successful quelling a royalist riot in Paris in , Napoleon was given command of the French army. After several decades of Napoleonic rule, then rule by various Bourbon monarchs, French citizens held numerous protests and uprisings, in part because of an economic crisis that continued to cause a decline in the living conditions for the lower class. A coalition of politicians created a second constitution and a new republic in after the fall of King Louis-Philippe.

During his tenure he enacted many democratic reforms, including abolishing slavery in all French territories , granting enormous press freedom, creating social programs for the unemployed, and extending universal suffrage. By late he orchestrated a coup and in a new constitution gave him dictatorial powers, thus ushering in a nearly year-long Second Empire. The length of the Third Republic—70 years—was essentially a happy accident.

The Third Republic was meant to be something like a caretaker republic until monarchists decided which royal family to put in charge, but then it kept chugging along. But even with the political seesawing, the country generally thrived. France is one of the very few countries whose history is marked by changes in different ruling systems. The Republic lasted for 12 years till Napoleon I established the first Empire with a coup in The second Republic was created after a Republican revolution in , and lasted for four years before the Empire was established again by the conservatives under Napoleon III.

The Fourth Republic came after the Second World War, and was a system where the President did not have as much power as today - the Assembly had the power to oust him. In the fifth Republic, the President is elected by universal suffrage, and referendums are held to consult public opinion. Charles de Gaulle was the first president of the fifth Republic, and Emmanuel Macron is the eighth.
