A number of studies have linked an increase in SSB consumption to high blood sugar. Consuming large amounts of sugar is linked to not only insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes but obesity and heart disease , too, making the second potential major side effect of that innocent summer beverage equally as dangerous.
One silver lining is that cutting down on the serving size of lemonade and pairing it with a meal that contains digestion-slowing healthy fats, protein, and fiber, can help lower the glycemic load of your meal, keeping blood sugar levels from sharply spiking. Lemonade is a great boost to the immune system, too. Not only does it provide us with our daily source of Vitamin C, but the benefits of lemonade are also seen in its antioxidizing qualities. Lemons provide antioxidants, keeping us healthy and able to battle sickness. As a bonus, antioxidants also help keep our skin fresh!
So what is lemonade good for? A lot of things, clearly, but every good thing has its darker side, too. As with any sugary drink, lemonade has negative health implications. But the reality is these will only start to adversely affect your health when you overdo it on the lemonade. Too much of a good thing is never good!
With lots of sugar in your average cup of lemonade, excess consumption can be a problem for your teeth. Too much sugar causes the protective enamel on the outside of your teeth to breakdown and decay. Over time, this leaves your teeth unprotected and ultimately more susceptible to pain and disease.
Too much of that sugar also causes a problem for your body, as well as your teeth. While we need sugars for energy, too much sugar can lead to a rise in blood sugar levels.
Over time, this can cause raised blood pressure and chronic illnesses such as adult-onset diabetes. These conditions are dangerous if left untreated and can lead to heart disease and other serious illnesses in later years. Excess sugars also cause us to put on weight, particularly when combined with a sedentary lifestyle. Is lemonade acidic? Yes, lemonade is also incredibly acidic, and this can cause a problem for people with a predisposition towards acid reflux or other gastrointestinal issues.
Drinking acidic drinks through a straw can help protect the teeth. Rinsing the mouth out afterward will also help. It may be best to avoid brushing the teeth straight after drinking lemon water, as the enamel may be in an acid-softened state. So, for people who like to drink lemon water in the morning, they may wish to brush their teeth before breakfast. Some sources claim that drinking cold water helps burn extra calories. Others believe that warm water helps improve digestive health.
There is very little research to support either side, and it is unlikely that the temperature makes any meaningful difference. A person can simply choose the temperature that they prefer. Most recipes suggest using the juice of a whole lemon or half a lemon mixed with a glass of water. Lemon water is a healthful drink that can add a good amount of vitamin C to the diet.
There are, however, plenty of unsupported health claims. If a person already eats lots of fruits and vegetables and drinks plenty of fluids, lemon is unlikely to add any significant nutritional benefits. That said, it is a refreshing and healthful alternative to many other flavored drinks.
