We struggled to get information about this integration, and eventually pushed to the point. We had a series of follow-up questions from that call which were emailed. After asking for clarification. At this point we have messaged all of our faculty who we know are using Elsevier products to let them know in more general language that we are not able to proceed with the integration and if a rep connects with them to let us know so we can be part of that conversation.
I would love to see a collection of what is known and unknown about these integrations in the Community. I am still waiting for Elsevier to come back to me after my initial email to them.
Rumour has it, Elsevier is delaying their deprecation of their internal systems, maybe they are frantically attempting to solve these problems. My dean of nursing let me know today that I didn't need to work on the Elsevier integration any longer. She said the Elsevier rep called to say their system will no longer integrate with Brightspace and that they would set up students with individual login credentials to their system and skip our LMS altogether.
If anyone hears an update on Elsevier, please let me know. I was informed on Monday by the Dean of our School of Health that Elsevier is putting the scrapping of the old system on hold and will focus on redevelopment of the newer systems.
I believe the old style of integration applies at the current point in time From my understanding, they are getting the refusal from at least two fronts, BS and BB. Not sure how Canvas' front is holding up, but I take it our counterparts in that system would have the same vetting process and therefore would check for the access level as well. But yes, Elsevier's connection should be status quo as before their silly announcement where they need Administrative access into everyone's systems.
I am curious what prompted Elsevier's plan to drop support. Was it push-back on the admin access? Was it an inability to meet the TLS 1. We do not have an Elsevier integration, I am just curious after spending most of this day struggling with various integrations. Any updates, Community? I have been approached regarding an Elsevier integration. Every year since this post, Elsevier approached our faculties to integrate this system.
Due to our review process, our faculties are asked to submit a request for external integration which goes into review from my side with recommendations to the VPA for a final decision. So after waiting for a month or so, our suggestion to the VPA was to decline this. Elsevier's representatives quoted what Jeff Keating wrote on Terry's blog about Blackboard saying it must be updated for Brightspace also.
I linked this post to them and asked them to confirm if they have addressed everything I have outlined here back in and if there is an updated Administrative instruction they can provide to me. That email was sent on July 16th, I have yet to hear any updates or response from them, hopefully they are double checking everything as this is being typed.
We have also scheduled a meeting with them for August 17th. Hopefully I can finally put this into production once and for all and stop driving our faculties insane.
My experience with Elsevier this year was that they sent faculty the exact same documentation we reviewed and rejected for integration for all the reasons you outlined two years ago in It doesn't seem they've done anything to address our collective concerns. Or if they have, it hasn't made it into the documents they're sending to faculty who need to integrate now that cartridges are no longer an option.
You should confirm with Elsevier whether the textbook in question needs the Outcomes tool that runs over the API to get grade data.
Fortunately, the texts our Health Sciences faculty have requested so far can do the linking and basic grade return with only the LTI "Evolve Link".
I did ask Elsevier technical support if they could give me a list of the minimum permissions their Outcomes tool needed, but didn't get a clear answer. I was just on the call our Elseiver and they have confirmed that if we don't include the Valence portion BS API now , the grade pass back portion would not be available. The LTI linking portion shouldn't be affected.
They are also working on an LTI 1. So for now, we are going to go ahead with just the LTI and no Valance Representatives who handle all customer types in Canada.
